Whistler RCMP can confirm that on June 24 at approximately 3:45 PM the missing kayaker was located deceased in the Cheakamus River several kilometers from where he was last seen on Sunday June 21st.

The recovery of the male was extremely challenging due to his location and the condition of the river at the time. Whistler RCMP are very appreciative of all of the friends and kayaking community, RCMP Air Services, Whistler SAR, Whistler Fire Service and off duties members of the SAR communities who assisted in the safe recovery of this individual.

On June 21, 2020 at approximately 6:15 PM, Whistler RCMP received a report that a kayaker had overturned in the Cheakamus River close to MacLaurin’s Crossing Suspension Bridge while kayaking with friends. Whistler RCMP, Whistler Search and Rescue, Whistler Fire Rescue Swift Water Team and friends of the kayaker immediately began to search for the male. At 9:30 PM the search was called off for the night due to darkness. Today, June 22, 2020, the search resumed at dawn with a helicopter, Whistler Search and Rescue, Whistler RCMP and fellow kayakers to traverse the rivers for kilometers. At approximately 9:30 AM the kayak used by the male was discovered several kilometers downstream from where he had been reported missing, trapped in a log jam. The river in the search area is currently running very high and fast which has made searching difficult and extremely dangerous for searches both on the water and at the shoreline. All efforts are being made to locate the male which have been unsuccessful so far. With the current run off and rain forecasted in the area it is expected that the river will be running high and fast for some time. The Whistler RCMP will not be disclosing information on the missing male at this time.
